2024 Tony Award Winner of Best Musical: The Outsiders, Live on Broadway
When theatrical effects masters J+M Special Effects asked LiveSpark to provide a set of FirePixels for their upcoming work on Broadway show “The Outsiders,” we set the pixel calibration for indoor use, set up our Controller and gave the staff a deep training session.
Little did we know how those effects magicians would transform the FirePixel’s normally vertical line of fire into new character, creating a feathery and hauntingly beautiful effect for the church burning scene in the show.
We caught up with J+M’s special effects designer Jeremy Chernick about how he created the scene: “We wanted to create a billowy, organic flame, so we placed perforated metal plates at different angles above each FirePixel, then varied the flame height to create a more dynamic effect.”
The Outsiders won 4 Tony awards including Best Musical and Best Lighting Design. The show runs 8 times each week at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in New York.
